The 85th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 12th September 1860 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was St Albans, a chestnut colt by Stockwell out of Bribery, owned by the 2nd Marquis of Ailesbury. A field of 15 runners contested the race, although there were 168 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 4200 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £4,075. This was a superbly competitive race in which Sabreur set the early pace. After 2 furlongs Sweetsauce took up the running and matched strides with Sabreur until the Red House, at which point first Umpire and then The Wizard took over. At the distance it seemed inevitable that The Wizard would hold, only to be collared by St Albans close home, winning by a head in 3 minutes 20 seconds. St Albans was an accomplished performer, winning the Chester Cup and Great Metroploitan at Epsom in 1860. | Over Round 112% |
